Hainan is located at the southernmost tip of China's territory. Together with many islands in the South China Sea, it covers a vast sea area equivalent to 1/4 of China's land area. The Nansha Islands in the south define China's southernmost border, and the Qiongzhou Strait in the north separates Hainan Island from the mainland.
